His creative mind sparked a program for veterans to share their stories with students at El Camino High School. The Veterans' Day event continues to the present under the sponsorship of the San Luis Rey Rotary Club and faculty members at El Camino High School.  Upon retirement from teaching in 1991 Jim authored "World War II: Tragedy in Slovakia", which received critical acclaim. It is now on the required reading list of all state department foreign state officers assigned to Slovakia, the scene of the OSS rescue mission.
